The History of Genie
The Genie story began in 1923, when the company was established as Alliance Manufacturing Company. Its early production included a diverse range of consumer, industrial, and military equipment. During World War II, the factory supported America’s wartime efforts by manufacturing products such as fuse caps, voltage regulators, canteen handles, and generators.
In 1954, Alliance Manufacturing introduced its first garage door opener under the Genie name. It became the first mass-produced, radio-controlled residential garage door opener, establishing a foundation for the brand’s reputation for innovation, safety, and dependable operation.
Genie continued advancing garage door technology in 1958 with the introduction of its first direct-drive screw opener. Later improvements, including a split-rail design, helped make the products more accessible through major retailers during the mid-1970s. As the do-it-yourself home improvement market expanded, consumer interest in Genie products increased. The company entered the home and shop vacuum market in 1983 and adopted the name Genie Home Products in 1985.
A major milestone occurred in 1994 when Overhead Door Corporation acquired the company. By that time, Genie had established itself as a trusted brand among homeowners worldwide, with products available through professional dealers, home improvement centers, hardware stores, and wholesale retailers. Its continued emphasis on product quality, customer service, and technological advancement helped strengthen that reputation.
Today, Genie develops and manufactures remote-controlled garage door openers and related accessories for a variety of distribution channels. Its product technology includes features such as DC motor systems, Intellicode® security technology, which changes the access code with each remote activation, and the Safe-T-Beam® infrared safety system, designed to detect obstructions in the garage door’s path and help prevent accidents.
Genie’s commitment to customer assistance extends to homeowners, professional installers, dealers, and retailers. Combined with decades of engineering development and a focus on reliable products, this dedication to service continues to make Genie a recognized name in the residential garage door opener industry.
